One year before Colombia's 2027 regional elections, the Conservative Party is considering two conditions for possible alliances in races for governorships, mayoralties, assemblies and councils, while the left also reorganizes its forces. --- The context --- Colombia is preparing to choose departmental and municipal authorities, a contest that will define local power. In that setting, each movement is deciding who it can walk with and who it cannot before selecting candidates across departments and cities. --- The facts --- The Conservative Party, today declared a governing party under the administration of Abelardo De La Espriella, is considering a first condition: no alliances with parties that do not currently back the Government. Some of its most representative leaders speak of coherence and consider that the movement cannot openly support the current administration while also joining with its opponents. The second condition under consideration is to make no alliances with parties or sectors that backed the presidential candidacy of Iván Cepeda. The movement openly supported De La Espriella in the presidential runoff, even though some of its politicians supported Gustavo Petro, and at the time it stated that the result made the president the representative voice of millions of citizens demanding a firm course, reaffirming its commitment to defending democracy. --- The positions --- On the conservative side, the line under consideration points to closing ranks with the Government. On the left, the Historic Pact this week chose Gustavo Petro as its president, although that place was expected to go to Iván Cepeda, the 2026 presidential candidate who won more than 11 million votes, and it is preparing internal consultations in departments and municipalities to define its official candidates. --- What remains unknown --- The Conservative Party will not make an official statement on alliances in this regard. It remains unknown how the conditions under consideration would be applied in each territory, which movements would be left out of possible local agreements and how candidacies will be settled in the most contested cities. --- Unanswered questions --- How would the two conditions under consideration be applied in practice by the conservative leadership in each territory? Which parties that do not back the Government today could seek approaches before 2027? Will the Historic Pact's internal consultations produce single candidates in the main cities? Will the Bogotá mayoralty end up setting the national tone of the regional campaign? --- EPM analysis --- The conditions under consideration organize the map before the campaign and mark distance from the left that backed Cepeda. In Bogotá, one of the most coveted stages, the source mentions Claudia López, former minister Susana Muhamad and even Gustavo Petro himself as possible names, in a contest that will measure the real strength of each bloc. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the two conditions under consideration point to a regional campaign shaped more by bloc discipline than by broad agreements, which may organize the governing camp's path in several territories but also narrow its room to add local forces where no party wins alone. The left, with Petro now leading its movement and internal consultations announced, will try to turn its national vote into territorial power. The outcome will depend on whether the coherence being invoked produces competitive candidates or isolation in key races across the country.
