Boca Chica to receive RD$1,400 million tourism investment plan

Boca Chica will receive an investment that could reach RD$1,400 million to transform its beach, recover public spaces and improve road infrastructure, Tourism Minister David Collado announced during an inauguration ceremony for works in the municipality. --- The context --- The announcement comes amid tourism expansion in the Dominican Republic, which according to Collado is on track to receive 12.5 million visitors, a figure he said would represent a record for the sector. Boca Chica, a nearby beach for residents of the capital and Greater Santo Domingo, is seeking renewal in that context to raise its appeal and improve daily conditions. --- The facts --- The Ministry of Tourism plans to allocate more than RD$1,100 million to different interventions in the municipality and, once road works are included, the total could rise to about RD$1,400 million. More than RD$250 million will go to paving streets and repairing sidewalks, with the stated aim of improving urban conditions and easing access for residents and visitors alike. The works include recovering public spaces, intervening on the beach and improving road infrastructure. Collado also said permit requests are arriving for apartments, short-stay lodging and new hotels, a sign of private interest raising questions about how growth will be shared locally. --- The positions --- Collado said at the event that they will transform Boca Chica and argued that the municipality deserves tourism with dignity and respect, with a worthy beach for Dominicans who want to go out and enjoy it. He stressed that development should include vendors, taxi drivers and other productive sectors, so improvements also mean opportunities for those who depend on tourism. The minister urged residents and merchants to care for the destination's image and warned that negative information shapes tourists' decisions, as visitors comparing destinations may choose Punta Cana or Juan Dolio instead. He closed by reiterating his commitment and coordination among authorities, merchants, transport workers, entrepreneurs and artisans to drive local development. --- What remains unknown --- The announcement does not detail the execution schedule for each intervention, the order of priority among the beach, public spaces and roads, or the mechanisms to track spending. It also does not specify how vendors and taxi drivers will be guaranteed a share of the benefits while works advance in the areas they use every day for their livelihoods. --- Unanswered questions --- Over what period will the announced investment be executed and what share goes to each work? How will success be measured in real income for the local community rather than only in visitor numbers? What guarantees will local productive sectors have during and after the intervention on the beach and its surrounding public spaces? --- EPM analysis --- The social test of the plan lies in inclusion: renewal limited to the beachfront could concentrate gains, while involving vendors, taxi drivers, entrepreneurs and artisans could spread tourism growth more widely, with benefits residents can verify over time. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the announced investment can be a real opportunity for Boca Chica if public spending is executed with transparency, verifiable timelines and effective community participation. Recovering the beach and the streets without including those who live from tourism would leave the transformation half done. The challenge is not only announcing RD$1,400 million, but proving with finished works and shared benefits that the destination gains dignity, access and opportunity for residents and visitors alike in the coming months ahead.
