Man named by police as suspected robber dies in Santiago operation

A man named by the Police as a suspected perpetrator of several robberies in Santiago died on Saturday night after being wounded in a confrontation with agents of the Central Investigation Directorate (DICRIM) in Jacagua, according to the institution. --- The context --- According to the Police, the deceased was wanted under an arrest warrant for his alleged participation in aggravated robberies, armed robberies and motorcycle thefts in Jacagua, Los Salados, Ensanche Libertad and Juan Pablo Duarte Avenue, near Quinta de Pontezuela. Among the incidents attributed to him is the October 8 assault in Ensanche Libertad, where a driver for a digital transport platform was allegedly stripped of his motorcycle after responding to a service request; according to the Police, the victim allegedly identified him as a suspected participant, and a video related to the case is circulating. --- The facts --- The Police identified the deceased as Wideiso Cris, alias "El Menor", a Haitian national. The incident occurred at around 7:50 p.m. in the La Rotonda sector of the Jacagua municipal district, and the man died while receiving medical attention. According to the police report, the agents were looking for him over his alleged participation in the assault on a nurse hours earlier. Under that account, the man allegedly fired at the patrol as they tried to arrest him and the agents repelled the attack; at the scene, officers seized an undocumented pistol that, according to the authorities, he allegedly used against the investigators. --- The positions --- The only version available so far is that of the Police: the institution maintains that its agents responded to an attack during an attempted arrest and links the deceased to Saturday morning's assault in Los Tocones, where three men on a motorcycle allegedly stripped a nurse of her belongings. For the moment, there is no independent account from witnesses or from the deceased's relatives. --- What remains unknown --- It has not been reported whether any camera recorded the La Rotonda confrontation or whether there will be an independent review of the patrol's actions. Nor are there public updates on the whereabouts of the other two suspected participants in the assault on the nurse. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the police account of the La Rotonda confrontation be verified with independent evidence? Where are the other two suspected participants in the assault on the nurse in Los Tocones? What will the investigations produce regarding the other incidents attributed to the deceased in Santiago? --- EPM analysis --- The case brings together two planes that should not be confused: a series of robberies attributed by the Police to a suspected perpetrator, and a death during an operation whose account comes, for now, from a single institutional source. The search for the other two suspected participants keeps the nurse assault file open, while the arrest warrant and the identification attributed to a victim sustain the allegation against the deceased without turning it into a conviction. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the death of a man named as a suspected robber in Santiago demands the same clarity in two directions: that the investigation into the attributed robberies advance until the other suspected participants are found, and that the La Rotonda confrontation be documented with verifiable evidence, not only with the acting patrol's report. Suspicion is not a conviction, and the police version, although it is the official one, needs corroboration before it becomes the only explanation of what happened in Jacagua on Saturday night.
