New leads point to John 40 in the Uribe Turbay assassination

New revelations held by prosecutors, attributed to a person from inside Segunda Marquetalia, point to John 40 as the alleged financier and mastermind of the…

--- The context --- The investigation into the assassination of Senator and former presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay remains open more than a year after his death, with the central question still unresolved: who the intellectual authors were. The Prosecutor's Office identified Segunda Marquetalia as the organization that allegedly ordered and paid the hitmen office led by Élder José Arteaga, known as Chipi or el Costeño, captured members of that gang and prosecuted the alleged liaison who transmitted the order, Simeón Pérez Marroquín, known as el Viejo or la Firma. New revelations are now held by the Prosecutor's Office, analyzed by that special group and handled as reserved information. According to what was delivered, they come from a person from inside Segunda Marquetalia who is seeking judicial benefits and the reward offered for his bosses. The family of Uribe Turbay also knows this information, which presents a broader account of the planning, financing and coordination of the killing, with meetings in Colombia and Venezuela and payments larger than those in the earlier confession by el Viejo. All of it remains under verification. --- The facts --- According to the information held by the family, the alleged financier and mastermind would be Géner García Molina, known as John 40, also identified as Francisco Javier Builes and described as a lieutenant and one of the men closest to Iván Márquez. Earlier, the statement by el Viejo pointed to the order coming from Segunda Marquetalia and to José Manuel Sierra, known as el Zarco Aldinever, who was said to have supposedly died in combat, without proof of that death. The testimony raises a total pool of 5,000 million pesos for the execution, money that John 40 himself would have collected from drug trafficking and illegal mining businesses on the border with Venezuela. That figure coexists with what el Viejo confessed earlier: 1,000 million pesos for the execution and logistics of the hitmen office of el Costeño, and 600 million pesos for bribes aimed, according to that confession, at diverting the investigation. The money entered the camps through el Viejo, captured on 27 October 2025 in the Brisas del Güéjar hamlet, in Puerto Lleras, Meta. Coordination, according to the testimony, took place between Villavicencio, in Meta, and Carurú, in Vaupés, on the border with Brazil, with the participation of two brothers of John 40 who live in Villavicencio and met with el Viejo to coordinate his entry into the camp, the killing and the delivery of the money. The source referred to at least one meeting in Venezuela, at the camp of Iván Márquez, with el Zarco Aldinever and John 40, and three others at a camp of John 40 in Carurú. In that area John 40 would move on six-wheeled amphibious quad bikes bought in Bogotá and sent to Vaupés. The decision was allegedly made by Iván Márquez at a meeting with the leading members of Segunda Marquetalia, with the virtual participation of Geovany Andrés Rojas, known as Araña, and his lieutenant, known as Jairo or Popeye. Walter Mendoza, Alberto Cruz Lobo, known as Enrique Marulanda, son of Manuel Marulanda, known as Tirofijo, el Zarco Aldinever and John 40 also allegedly took part. A large part of the 5,000 million pesos would come, according to the source, from a mine in Barrancominas, Guainía, run by John 40, from which gold and coltan are extracted. --- The positions --- The family maintains, based on what was delivered to it, that John 40 would be the financier and mastermind, and it placed that material in the hands of the Prosecutor's Office. Claudia Tarazona, the wife of the murdered senator, revealed that she was told that the order came out of the Senate, that this information has already been delivered to prosecutors and that the message she received mentioned Marcos Calarcá organizing an attack. In response, Luis Eduardo de la Hoz, lawyer for Calarcá, denied the accusations and argued that pointing fingers without proof inside the Prosecutor's Office is irresponsible, while stating that his client is meeting his responsibilities before the JEP. The new information also refers to an alleged intention to attack former President César Gaviria Trujillo, with the participation of Kendry Téllez, known as Yaco, head of the urban command, a participant appearing before the JEP and now a fugitive, who had allegedly been twice in Venezuela crossing through Puerto Carreño. El Viejo identified Yaco as the person who informed him that Segunda Marquetalia ordered the operation. All of it remains under verification by prosecutors. --- What remains unknown --- It remains unknown whether prosecutors can turn this testimony into proof about the intellectual authors, because the source is seeking judicial benefits and the reward for his bosses. It remains to be established where each part of the money came from, how it moved between the border with Venezuela, Villavicencio and Carurú, and what role each named person played. The situation of el Zarco Aldinever, the whereabouts of John 40 and Yaco, and whether the Senate reference has verifiable support or will remain an unproven complaint also remain to be clarified. --- Unanswered questions --- Can the Prosecutor's Office corroborate with independent evidence that John 40 financed and planned the assassination, beyond a testimony interested in benefits? Where did the 5,000 million pesos come from and how were they divided among execution, logistics and bribes? What support exists for the claim that the order came out of the Senate and what relationship would it have with the leadership of Segunda Marquetalia? Where are John 40 and Yaco today and what measures exist to capture them and protect the people mentioned as possible targets? --- EPM analysis --- The value of this information lies in the way it arranges, in a single attributed account, pieces that previously appeared separately: an identified alleged financier, a pool larger than the one confessed at the start, a route of meetings across Meta, Vaupés and Venezuela and a decision attributed to the leadership. Its weakness is that of any interested testimony. The special group must separate what is corroborated from what is merely asserted. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the new leads must be treated with seriousness and caution at the same time, because they name an alleged mastermind and describe concrete financing, but they arise from an interested testimony that still requires full checking before prosecutors and judges. Justice owes the country a complete answer on the intellectual authors, without turning each reserved revelation into an early verdict or allowing the passage of time to dilute the search for the truth. Protecting due process, verifying the money, the meetings and the attributed movements and sanctioning those responsible with solid evidence is the only way to close this wound with lasting and verifiable institutional credibility for everyone.
