Alias 'Resorte', alleged ELN finance leader, dies in combat

According to the military report, Ricardo Trigos Peñaranda, alias 'Resorte', died in combat in Chinácota, Norte de Santander.

--- The context --- Ricardo Trigos Peñaranda, known as alias 'Resorte', was identified, according to military information, as finance leader of the Reynaldo Ardila Gómez Urban Front, of the ELN National Urban War Front in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area. According to military intelligence, he was 40 years old, was from La Playa de Belén and had spent nine years in armed organizations, with criminal intelligence, finance and logistical support functions. --- The facts --- According to the military report, he died in combat with National Army troops in the Palo Colorado rural area, in Chinácota, Norte de Santander, during an operation carried out at around 9 in the morning on October 20. The Military Gaula of Brigade 30 and the Norte de Santander Military Gaula took part, in operation Estabilidad No. 010 Olimpo, with support from BAFUR 2 and coordination with the Gaula of the Cúcuta Metropolitan Police. According to the report, a pistol, a magazine for 9 millimeter ammunition, three cartridges, a pickup truck and two cell phones were seized. --- The positions --- In its operational assessment, the Army maintains that the death affects the command and control, financing and coordination capabilities of the front, and weakens drug trafficking, extortion, kidnappings, selective homicides and logistical support in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area. The report adds that it could force a reorganization of commanders in Cúcuta, Chinácota, San Faustino and Villa del Rosario, and that the operation seeks to reduce the structure's capacity against merchants, business owners and the civilian population. --- What remains unknown --- The report states that in 2018 and 2019 he allegedly served as an urban leader of the EPL and that in 2025 he was listed as finance leader of the economic component of the front. He is attributed alleged participation in the kidnapping of merchant Isaías Ascanio León, in 2019, of two journalists, in 2020, and of rancher Iván Cetina, that same year. He is also attributed alleged participation in a double homicide on August 29, 2026, on the road toward San Faustino. Authorities found annotations for extortive kidnapping, conspiracy to commit crimes, arms trafficking and homicide, with the judicial situation still to be established, according to the report. --- Unanswered questions --- What reach will the impact have on the front's financing in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area? What reorganization will take place in Cúcuta, Chinácota, San Faustino and Villa del Rosario? How will the judicial situation arising from his record be established? --- EPM analysis --- The profile combines finance, criminal intelligence and logistical support. What matters is whether the weakening is sustained or those functions are redistributed. The report recalls that he was captured on March 5, 2021, in San Agustín de los Pozos, in Cúcuta, for weapons manufacture and carrying, conspiracy to commit crimes, kidnapping and homicide, with four pistols, a carbine, grenades and ammunition seized. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the loss described by the Army strikes the financial node of an urban structure, but its real effect will depend on sustained pressure against the extortion and kidnapping networks that affect merchants and the civilian population. Without institutional continuity, state presence and effective protection in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area, a figure of this profile can be replaced and the internal reorganization can quickly rebuild the finance, criminal intelligence and logistical support functions that are now described as weakened.
