Operation Castillo: two dozen arrests target an alleged three-country network

An operation by agencies from Colombia, the United States and Puerto Rico produced two dozen arrests against an alleged drug trafficking and asset laundering…

--- The context --- An alleged drug trafficking network operated, according to the investigation, from hubs in Puerto Rico, New York and Miami, with links in Bogota, Barranquilla, La Guajira and Yopal. From Colombia, they reportedly coordinated shipments to the United States and laundered assets. --- The facts --- In the international operation, the DEA, the CTI and the National Army captured seven people in Colombia, all wanted for extradition by United States authorities. Among them is alias Gallo or Guillo, named as the alleged main coordinator. Another 17 people were detained in Puerto Rico and two more in New York and Miami, for a total of two dozen arrests. Army sources said undercover agents carried out controlled deliveries of more than 670.000 dollars and secured 87 packages of cocaine hydrochloride. --- The positions --- Investigators presented Operation Castillo as a significant blow against large-scale trafficking. United States authorities stressed, as attributed, that coordination among three countries' agencies made the result possible and gathered the evidence behind the extradition requests. --- What remains unknown --- The identities of two dozen detainees and the charges each alleged member faces remain unknown. It is also unknown how long the undercover investigation lasted or what will happen to assets tied to the alleged laundering. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the extradition of the seven people captured in Colombia be decided? What concrete charges will alias Gallo or Guillo face in the United States? Are other links of the alleged network still unidentified? --- EPM analysis --- The alleged structure worked on two shores: supply and contacts in Colombia, distribution and collection in the United States and Puerto Rico. Striking both ends aims to stop the organization from quickly replacing arrested members. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Operation Castillo confirms that cooperation among agencies from three countries remains the most effective tool against networks that operate across several territories at the same time. The two dozen arrests and the controlled deliveries weaken a structure accused of moving drugs and money, but definitive dismantling will depend on extraditions moving forward and on courts proving each individual responsibility without turning presumption into an early conviction for any of those detained.
