Storm Adam cut off half a dozen coastal towns between southern Gandia and Oliva, with rescues through the night, 709 incidents recorded and around 103.000 Valencian pupils left without classes. --- The context --- La Safor and La Marina Alta became the epicenter of an episode of extraordinary rainfall. The storm dropped more than 600 liters per square meter in a day across both districts, with totals such as Pego, at 638,5 liters per square meter in 24 hours, and Forna, in l’Atzúbia, at 635,2, according to the State Meteorological Agency. --- The facts --- Oliva concentrated the largest number of incidents, with 172 of the 709 incidents recorded by the Emergency Coordination Center between Saturday afternoon and early Monday, in a town that had already passed 500 liters per square meter. Mayor Yolanda Pastor reported the evacuation of some 2.000 people staying at seven campsites and described a «very complicated» situation, with the low part of town flooded toward the beach and rescues under way. The human toll rose to four deaths: a woman in Cabrera de Mar on Sunday, another in Sagunto that same night, a 79-year-old woman found in Oliva and a man of 64 who died of a heart attack at a campsite in Oliva. Rescues lasted all night, with 65 interventions by Alicante firefighters and a helicopter that evacuated eight adults, a child, a baby and a dog in Oliva. --- The positions --- The Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, warned that half a dozen coastal towns between southern Gandía and Oliva had been cut off. In La Marina Alta, the Girona river overflowed as it passed Els Poblets and left cars piled up in the streets; its mayor, José Luis Mas, spoke of «a material disaster» and stressed that the town had no victims to mourn. Emergency councilor Juan Carlos Valderrama acknowledged that there were «many people trapped» and that trucks could not reach the flooded areas, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez asked for «much caution». --- What remains unknown --- The full extent of damage to homes, campsites and infrastructure between Gandía and Oliva is still unknown, as is when mobility will be restored in the towns that were cut off. The final rescue balance has not been detailed either. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the coastal towns cut off between southern Gandía and Oliva recover full mobility? What final damage does the overflow of the Girona river leave as it passes Els Poblets? How will the 2.000 people evacuated from the campsites of Oliva be cared for while the damage is assessed? --- EPM analysis --- The regional government activated emergency situation 2 early on Monday, October 19 and later approved the confinement of 145 municipalities, 77 in Valencia and 68 in Alicante, after four ES-Alert messages in two days. The weather agency lowered the red warning to orange and the forecast points to a gradual withdrawal from Tuesday, although around 103.000 pupils were left without classes and 24 roads were counted cut. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, when half a dozen towns are cut off, 709 incidents overwhelm the emergency services and around 103.000 pupils lose classes, the priority cannot be anything other than protecting lives and restoring mobility and basic services as soon as possible. The families of Oliva, Els Poblets and the whole affected strip need clear information, complete rescues, fast aid for the damage and an honest review of how the response works when water isolates entire towns again.
