Senators file complaint against Levy Rincón over attacks on first lady

At least 25 senators filed a criminal complaint against activist Levy Rincón for allegedly insulting first lady Ana Lucía Pineda, after a social media message…

--- The context --- First lady Ana Lucía Pineda, wife of President Abelardo De La Espriella, has faced accusations from activists on social media. That climate of attacks against a woman who holds no elected office has now become a court case, after senators from different parties turned to the courts. --- The facts --- At least 25 senators filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General Office against left-wing activist Levy Rincón, for allegedly slandering, defaming and insulting the first lady. The complaint asks investigators to examine alleged conduct against the honor, good name and dignity of Pineda. The trigger was a social media message in which Rincón asked the president to have his own wife arrested, insulted her with an offensive epithet and accused her without proof. Among the signatories seen are Alfredo Deluque, of Partido de La U; Honorio Henríquez, of Centro Democrático; Carlos Eduardo Guevara; Hernán Cadavid, and Fabio Amín. --- The positions --- Senator Jota Pe Hernández, of Alianza Verde, one of the complainants, said on social media that violence against women has consequences, that they made the law and that the time has come to enforce it, and he asked for justice for the first lady. He also argued that political differences do not justify insults or unfounded accusations, and that freedom of expression does not exclude responsibility for violating the rights of others. Pineda said she feels pity for anyone who uses a woman to become visible, and she maintained that such attacks do not intimidate her. The first lady has also faced accusations from other activists, such as cartoonist Matador, a former contractor under the government of Gustavo Petro, and backing from several political sectors. --- What remains unknown --- It is not yet known what decisions prosecutors will take or what charges could arise from the investigation. There has also been no known public response from Rincón, nor whether he will present a defense. --- Unanswered questions --- Will prosecutors open a formal investigation against Levy Rincón over the reported facts? What weight will a complaint signed by at least 25 senators from different parties carry? Will this case set a clear standard on responsibility for insults on social media? --- EPM analysis --- The case moves into criminal court the debate about the limits of speech online, where insults against relatives of a head of state often carry no consequence. The breadth of the signatories shows support beyond one bloc, although prosecutors will determine whether a crime occurred. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the complaint sets a necessary limit against an activism that turned the wife of the president into a target of insults and unproven accusations. Defending the honor of a woman who is not competing for office does not restrict political debate, because criticizing a government remains legitimate. What is before the courts is not an opinion, but the alleged personal offense, and prosecutors must establish with evidence whether a crime occurred.
