Canoes and helicopters rescue people trapped by DANA Adam

DANA Adam caused severe flooding in towns on the Valencia and Alicante coast, leaving homes waterlogged and people trapped, helped with canoes, helicopters and other means. --- The context --- The emergency centered on ground-floor homes, where the water prevented many residents from leaving on their own. --- The facts --- In Oliva, residents used canoes to bring people out of ground-floor homes where the water rose above one meter. The Helimer 202 helicopter rescued eight adults, one child, one baby and one dog, and Civil Guard officers helped a woman and her two children on the roof of a flooded house. In Gandía, National Police officers rescued a 93-year-old woman with reduced mobility, trapped under more than one and a half meters of water, and carried her on a paddle surf board to an off-road vehicle and a hospital center for hypothermia symptoms. Some 821 officers took part, with nearly one hundred rescues and up to 2,100 people evacuated, mainly in Oliva, and drones located people at risk in areas such as the mouth of an overflowing river in Denia. --- The positions --- Authorities maintain search and assistance work and restrict access to roads, bridges and flood-prone areas. --- What remains unknown --- Conditions are reported to have begun improving, but the full damage is not yet known, nor how long access restrictions will remain. --- Unanswered questions --- How many ground floors remain flooded in Oliva and Gandía? When will evacuated people return home? What support will residents with reduced mobility receive? --- EPM analysis --- Two levels combine: neighborhood solidarity acting within minutes with canoes, and teams with helicopters, drones and hundreds of officers. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this emergency is a reminder that protecting the most vulnerable people cannot depend only on improvised solidarity, however valuable it may be, but on prior plans that identify ground-floor homes, neighbors with reduced mobility and safe evacuation routes, because when water rises above one meter every minute counts and the difference between an orderly rescue and a tragedy usually lies in preparation before the storm and coordination afterward between residents and public services working together.
