Feijoo says arguments, not violence, should settle differences in Barcelona

Feijóo said differences should be defended with arguments and never with violence after Saturday unrest in Barcelona's Plaza de Cataluña, where there were…

--- The context --- Plaza de Cataluña saw unrest on Saturday night that disrupted one of Barcelona's busiest spaces, with shops and tourists affected and police deployed since the afternoon. --- The facts --- Vans of the Mossos d'Esquadra sealed off the square from the afternoon, as activists, most of them hooded and dressed in black, gathered there. Officers carried out small charges to disperse them. Firefighters from the Bombers put out a barricade made of small containers, bins and motorbikes at the junction of Bergara street with the square. Activists later set fire to part of the terrace of the Zúrich bar and to more bins, smashed the glass of two bus shelters, wrecked a traffic light and damaged other street furniture. Some shops protected their windows and entrances, and police asked tourists to leave the square. Police sources confirmed several arrests without giving a specific number. By late evening no fires remained, vans still surrounded the square and activists were increasingly dispersed, amid damage and looting in shop windows, shelters and bins, and motorbikes and bicycles left on the ground or burned. --- The positions --- The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has said that in a democracy differences are defended with arguments, never with violence or by building walls. He has written that coexistence requires responsibility and not fuelling those who put it at risk. He has also said that Spain needs a change born at the ballot box, with freedom and respect. --- What remains unknown --- The exact number of arrests is not yet known, as police sources did not specify it. There is also no full assessment of damage to shops and street furniture, nor whether the gathering followed an identified prior call. --- Unanswered questions --- How many people were arrested during the unrest in the square and its surroundings? What is the full extent of the damage to shops, shelters and street furniture? Will the police deployment remain in the area in the coming hours? --- EPM analysis --- The episode combines the right to protest with a clear limit: violence is not part of that exercise. The institutional response sought to restore normality. The challenge is to preserve coexistence through dialogue and shared responsibility, so peaceful protest is not linked to destruction. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, what happened in Barcelona requires a clear separation between legitimate protest and the violence that undermines it. Defending ideas with arguments, as Feijóo has argued, strengthens democracy and leaves no room for those who build barricades. Coexistence needs firm institutions, but also channels of dialogue that prevent tension from recurring. Without that dual response, each outbreak of unrest erodes public trust and the shared use of public space in the city centre for everyone.
