El Tambo Strike: 10 ELN Members Confirmed Dead, Including Two Commanders

The official toll of Operation Ónix confirmed 10 ELN members dead in the October 22 bombing in El Tambo, Cauca, among them alias Marcos Pacífico and alias…

--- The context --- Colombia's southwest is the scene of offensive operations against the illegal armed structures that dispute territorial control. In Cauca, Nariño and Valle del Cauca, that presence means homicides, recruitment of minors and forced displacement that hit rural communities first. That is the setting of the bombing carried out on Thursday, October 22, in the rural area of El Tambo, Cauca, against an ELN structure, amid those offensive operations. --- The facts --- This Sunday the official toll of Operation Ónix became known: President Abelardo de la Espriella, who traveled to Cali on Saturday afternoon to receive the information, confirmed 10 ELN members dead, among them alias Marcos Pacífico and alias Ochenta, also called Murillo, two of the main commanders. The operation was carried out against the José María Becerra Front, part of the Southwestern War Front. Seven rifles, one pistol and two grenades were seized, and a camp area for approximately 25 members of the illegal armed group was located. --- The positions --- According to the president, alias Marcos Pacífico was one of the ELN's main figures in Cauca, spent more than 24 years in the group and led the José María Becerra Front, with influence in Cauca, Nariño and Valle del Cauca and a role tied to territorial control. According to the president, that commander is attributed more than 72 homicides, the recruitment of hundreds of minors, the forced displacement of more than five hundred people and having been the mastermind of the illegal uprising that promoted urban terrorism in 2019 and 2021, and the operation struck a fundamental part of the ELN leadership in the region. --- What remains unknown --- The official toll does not detail the identity of the other dead members or the full effect on the structure, and there is no independent verification of the attributed figures. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the full toll of Operation Ónix be confirmed through independent verification? What protection measures will rural communities in Cauca receive after the bombing? How will the recruitment of minors and forced displacement that punish the southwest be prevented? --- EPM analysis --- The blow against the ELN regional leadership is a weighty fact, but its real value will be measured in the territory: whether armed pressure on communities falls or the structure rebuilds itself. Verification of every figure is part of that measurement. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the toll of Operation Ónix must be read with seriousness: there is a confirmed blow against the ELN regional leadership and, at the same time, an obligation of rigorous verification over every figure and every effect on the territory. Protecting the communities of Cauca, preventing the recruitment of minors and ensuring a permanent State presence, not only a military one, is the yardstick by which this result should be judged in the coming weeks.
