Venezuelan families still lack a reliable death toll after the June earthquakes

Venezuela's official toll of 6.509 dead after the June earthquakes contrasts with far higher USGS statistical projections, while families still lack verified…

--- The context --- The official toll of 6.509 dead from the two earthquakes that shook Venezuela on June 24 is under question. For families still searching for answers, that figure is the measure of whether they have received a verifiable account of how many people really died. Scientific estimates and citizen records point to a considerably higher number. --- The facts --- On June 24, 2026, two movements of magnitudes 7,2 and 7,5 struck northern Venezuela. The USGS documented both events and warned about the risk of landslides triggered by the seismic activity. According to a published analysis, USGS projections place the estimated average of earthquake-related deaths at 53.000, and calculate an 81 % probability that deaths exceed 10.000. These are statistical estimates, not a confirmed count of victims, and they must be read that way. Without an updated national census, establishing the real toll is difficult: the USGS models exposure with demographic data, territorial distribution and the characteristics of inhabited areas. The analysis examined damage in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit regions, where 16 public housing towers collapsed. Each had 12 residential floors and eight apartments per level: some 5.200 people lived in those buildings, although it is not known how many were inside when the earthquakes struck. A review of satellite images from the Copernicus programme identified close to 700 destroyed structures, against the 190 completely collapsed buildings first reported. Minister Francisco Garcés acknowledged a higher figure: 656 buildings and 370 homes collapsed or partially destroyed. --- The positions --- The United Nations reported in August that authorities were reporting 6.509 dead, 16.740 injured and close to 18.000 people homeless. In September, a joint assessment led by the Venezuelan Government and international organisations estimated damage and losses at 14.831 million dollars, with recovery needs of up to 21.000 million. Two citizen platforms, Desaparecidos Terremoto Venezuela and Venezuela Reporta, gather tens of thousands of missing-person reports, with possible duplicate records or people located afterwards, as their managers acknowledge. They do not constitute a verified count of the dead, but they show the difficulties families face in obtaining answers. For human rights organisations, a reliable figure is indispensable to accompany families and determine whether there were responsibilities for avoidable deaths. --- What remains unknown --- The Government had not publicly updated the death toll since August 24, according to the published analysis. Without definitive data, no figure yet closes the distance with the scientific projections. --- Unanswered questions --- How many people really died in the June earthquakes in Venezuela? How many of the people who lived in the 16 towers in La Guaira were inside when the earthquakes struck? When will the death toll, unchanged since August 24, be updated? --- EPM analysis --- The debate is not only statistical: every incomplete figure leaves families not knowing whether to keep searching for their own. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, no family should have to rebuild, on citizen platforms, the answer that should be given with updated and verifiable official data. USGS projections are statistical estimates, not a confirmed count, but their distance from the official 6.509 dead demands full transparency, cleaned-up records and a reliable figure built with families. Accompanying those who search for their missing, and determining whether there were avoidable deaths, begins with something elementary: telling the complete truth about how many people died.
