Dominican Republic contributes 20 million dollars against Haiti gangs

The Dominican Republic contributed approximately 20 million dollars to the Gang Suppression Force in Haiti, along with logistical, medical and transport…

--- The context --- The security crisis in Haiti worries Dominican authorities, while international efforts seek to contain the violence of criminal organizations and protect the population affected by the advance of the gangs across that territory. --- The facts --- Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó reported this Monday that the Dominican Republic has made a direct economic contribution of approximately 20 million dollars to the Gang Suppression Force, in addition to logistical, medical and transport support for the international contingents operating in Haiti. The cooperation includes coordinating the transit of personnel entering Haiti through Dominican territory, given the difficulties of direct access through Haitian ports and airports. It also covers medical evacuations, with accumulated investment of approximately US$1,061,000, plus transit of blood shipments, safe-conduct passes, border crossings, humanitarian air operations and the transfer of military cargo. --- The positions --- Bisonó explained that the mission is multinational, with police, military and civilian components, and was authorized by the United Nations Security Council. Its goal, he said, is to support Haitian security bodies, protect critical infrastructure and back access to and distribution of humanitarian aid, in coordination with the authorities of Haiti and within the United Nations legal framework. --- What remains unknown --- The breakdown of the 20 million dollars among the support components and the schedule for each disbursement were not specified. The completion of the transit of the contingent from Bangladesh, coordinated with the Government of Germany and still under way at the time of the remarks, was not confirmed either. --- Unanswered questions --- How will it be verified that the support translates into protection for civilians and humanitarian aid? When will the planned deployment of the mission be completed? What will happen if the full contingent is not reached during the next three months? --- EPM analysis --- The mission currently has about 2,181 personnel from Bangladesh, Chad, Jamaica, Guatemala, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and El Salvador, and the goal is to complete approximately 5,500 members during the next three months. Dominican backing sustains that structure with resources, transit routes and medical care. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the value of the Dominican contribution is not measured only in the 20 million dollars, but in the support network that makes the mission possible: safe transit, medical evacuations and routes for humanitarian aid to reach where it is needed. That multilateral approach, coordinated with Haitian authorities and under the United Nations framework, protects the civilian population while seeking to recover control of the territory from the gangs and contain a crisis that spills beyond Haiti's borders and demands sustained regional commitment.
