UK phases out legacy patent services and moves renewals online

The British intellectual property office will not retire Web Filing on 8 November 2026 and will phase out its legacy patent services instead, with closure…

--- The context --- The British intellectual property office launched its new patents service on 1 April 2026 and has since been improving it while preparing to retire the legacy services that still run alongside the new platform. The original plan was to decommission the online filing service known as Web Filing and the email forms channel together, but that joint shutdown has now been replaced by a more gradual and phased timetable. --- The facts --- Web Filing will not be retired on 8 November 2026 and will remain open for the time being, with the office promising to confirm a precise retirement date soon and expecting it to fall early in December. From Thursday 29 October 2026 a new submission receipt feature will let applicants see the full details of their application immediately after submitting it, without waiting for a security check to be completed first. From 9 November 2026 patent renewals will be made from the personal intellectual property account rather than the current page, while renewals of trade marks and registered designs will see no change in how they are handled. --- The positions --- The office says it listened carefully to customer feedback and worked closely with the chartered institute of patent attorneys to understand how the impact of the change on service users could be kept to a minimum. The email forms channel will remain available after Web Filing is retired, and a contingency document upload service will be provided in the next few weeks as a back-up for anyone unable to use the new patents service. --- What remains unknown --- The precise retirement date for Web Filing has not yet been confirmed, and neither has the exact day when the contingency upload service will go live, although the office says that back-up will arrive before the final shutdown. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the precise retirement date for Web Filing be announced? Will the contingency upload service be ready and tested before that shutdown? How many users still rely on the legacy services to file and renew today? --- EPM analysis --- The renewal itself will work in almost exactly the same way as before, with payment still possible by card or deposit account and up to 1,500 patents renewable in a single transaction, although patents, trade marks and designs will no longer be renewable together in one combined transaction. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, phasing the retirement protects users who still depend on the older channels and acknowledges that a forced digital migration would have produced avoidable errors and delays. The immediate receipt and the document upload back-up point in the right direction, because they provide certainty at the most delicate moment of the process. The real test will come when the final closure date is set and renewals move into the account, a step that demands clear communication and enough adaptation time for firms, companies and individual applicants across the whole country.
