Green light for the 800MW Great North Road solar park in the UK

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero today granted development consent to the Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park, an 800MW solar project…

--- The context --- The Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park combines a solar photovoltaic generating station, battery storage and grid connection infrastructure, with maximum generation capacity of 800MW. --- The facts --- The development consent application was granted today by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Baroness Curran made the decision on behalf of the Energy Secretary's legal authority. Elements Green Trent Limited submitted the application to the Planning Inspectorate on 27 June 2025; it was accepted for examination on 22 July 2025. The Examining Authority recommended to the Secretary of State on 28 July 2026. --- The positions --- The public, statutory consultees and interested parties could give evidence. The Examining Authority, the Planning Inspectorate states, listened to and fully considered local views before recommending. --- What remains unknown --- The announcement gives no construction timetable, exact siting or next steps after consent, and no date for the plant entering operation. --- Unanswered questions --- When will construction of the park begin and in what phases will the authorised 800MW be deployed? What specific conditions accompany the consent granted today? When will the timetable for grid connection and for bringing the battery storage into service be known? --- EPM analysis --- This is the 117th energy application out of 185 examined to date, completed within the statutory timescale of the Planning Act 2008. The decision, recommendation and evidence are publicly available on the project pages. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, approving an 800MW project with storage shows that scale is no longer the main obstacle when an application survives a complete public examination. The value of this decision lies in the procedure: six months of evidence, local participation and a formal recommendation before signature. If the Government wants to accelerate clean energy without eroding trust, this orderly file, completed within the statutory timescale, offers a verifiable reference for the cases that follow.
