Rachel Fentem named new British ambassador to South Korea

Rachel Emma-Jane Fentem has been appointed British ambassador to the Republic of Korea, succeeding Colin James Crooks, who will leave the Diplomatic Service.

--- The context --- The United Kingdom has announced a change at its embassy to the Republic of Korea, keeping British representation in Seoul in the hands of an official with a long record of service. --- The facts --- Rachel Emma-Jane Fentem has been appointed His Majesty's Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in succession to Colin James Crooks, who will be leaving the Diplomatic Service. She will take up her appointment during March 2027. Since 2025 she has been in pre-posting training. From 2022 to 2025 she was Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary, after serving as Deputy Principal Private Secretary from 2021 to 2022. In 2016 and 2017 she also directed overseas operations at the Department for International Trade, and between 2009 and 2010 she served as a policy adviser at the Cabinet Office. --- The positions --- She served in Berlin as Counsellor for European and Economic affairs from 2018 to 2021, and twice in Tokyo: Counsellor for Economic affairs in 2017 and 2018, and Counsellor for Political and Media affairs in 2015 and 2016. --- What remains unknown --- The announcement confirms the appointment, the succession and the date. It does not set out the priorities Fentem will take to Seoul or the exact timetable for the handover. --- Unanswered questions --- When in March 2027 will Fentem formally take up the embassy? What priorities will shape the start of her mission in Seoul? How will the handover with Colin James Crooks be arranged? --- EPM analysis --- The appointment combines service in European and Asian capitals with work close to the Foreign Secretary. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the appointment of Rachel Emma-Jane Fentem keeps institutional continuity at the British embassy to the Republic of Korea, backed by a record spanning Berlin, Tokyo and the centre of the foreign ministry. Her time in Tokyo and at International Trade gives her familiarity with Asia and with the economic side of the role, concrete assets for a mission beginning in March 2027.
