Philippines evacuates over a thousand families as Mayon erupts

Philippine authorities ordered families living within six kilometres of Mayon to evacuate after an eruption raised the alert to level 3.

--- The context --- Mayon, the most active volcano in the Philippine archipelago, erupted on Friday in Albay province and forced authorities to order families living within a six kilometre radius to leave. The Philippines lies in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity. --- The facts --- The eruption began at 11.53 local time, 03.53 GMT, and ended almost six minutes later with a dense ash cloud that rose 3.000 metres above the summit crater. The alert rose to level 3 on a scale of 5 after 101 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the last 24 hours, compared with between 3 and 14 a day the previous week. Oscar Robert Cristóbal, head of the Albay emergency office, estimated that the evacuated families in the area would be around 1.133, pending reports from local governments. In Tabaco, a mandatory evacuation of five neighbourhoods affects 489 families and 1.787 people, while in Camalig authorities moved 205 families to two evacuation centres. --- The positions --- The response focuses on protecting displaced people. Trucks, food packages and hygiene kits were sent to the evacuation centres, supported by the Army, the Coast Guard, the National Police and the social welfare department, according to the provincial office. In Camalig, thousands of masks were also handed out against the ashfall and the emergency operations centre activated its red code. --- What remains unknown --- No victims have been reported so far and only light ashfall has been recorded in Camalig, Guinobatan and the high areas of Legazpi, the provincial capital. The final count of evacuees still needs confirmation, as does whether lava flows will appear on the slopes in the coming days or weeks, a risk authorities consider possible. --- Unanswered questions --- How many families will finally be out of their homes when all local reports arrive? How long will evacuees need to stay in the centres that have been opened? Will the evacuation expand if lava flows appear on the slopes in the coming days? --- EPM analysis --- The seismic jump explains the speed of the humanitarian response, because activity rose to 101 volcanic earthquakes in 24 hours. The Philippine volcanology institute considers that Mayon has entered a new phase of magmatic eruption, with a greater tendency towards a dangerous eruption. It is the second time this year that the volcano has reached level 3, after January, when the alert lasted seven months, until August. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the most important measure today is not only moving families out of the danger radius, but sustaining their protection for as long as the displacement lasts, with food, hygiene, masks and centres able to receive them without improvisation. The January experience shows that an alert can last for months, so the quality of care in the centres will matter as much as the speed of the first evacuation for the communities of Albay.
