Cuscatlán Park Will Host the Country's First Outdoor Library

The San Salvador Centro mayor's office will inaugurate tomorrow El Salvador's first outdoor library at Cuscatlán Park, as part of the Seoul ODA Challenge 2026…

--- The context --- Cuscatlán Park is a representative public space in San Salvador, recognized for its contribution to civic coexistence and for its management of shared spaces. In 2022 it received El Salvador's Sustainable Construction Champion recognition, in the Exemplary City Impact Project category. --- The facts --- The San Salvador Centro mayor's office will inaugurate tomorrow El Salvador's first outdoor library, at Cuscatlán Park. The project is part of the Seoul ODA Challenge 2026 program, an Official Development Assistance initiative promoted by the Government of Seoul, in South Korea, which seeks to modernize municipalities in developing countries. According to the municipality, the goal is to encourage reading in a relaxed and safe environment, by enabling public spaces for cultural and educational activities. The mayor's office explained that it is a temporary or permanent extension of a public library that moves books, reading and cultural activities into open spaces during the summer or vacation periods, with comfortable furniture such as bean bags, chairs or blankets on the grass. --- The positions --- San Salvador Centro will share the distinction with other cities: Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, will carry out a similar project; Bishkek, in Kyrgyzstan, a community fitness program; and Bangkok, in Thailand, will receive advice on pedestrian crossings. This year's edition adds the Project Track, focused on soft infrastructure, with social, educational and welfare programs, in contrast to traditional approaches centered on physical infrastructure, such as transport and water projects. --- What remains unknown --- The available information does not specify the hours, the number of books or the schedule of activities for the opening. It has not been detailed either whether the library will operate temporarily or permanently, or how the material will be protected in an open space. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the Cuscatlán Park library operate temporarily or permanently? What hours and activities will it offer to attract readers of different ages? How will the books and furniture be protected outdoors? --- EPM analysis --- Last June, officials from the mayor's office traveled to Seoul for practical training on the management of public spaces and on the implementation of this kind of project. That preparation, together with the park's track record, places the inauguration on favorable ground. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, taking books out of reading rooms and onto the grass is the right call because it brings reading closer to people who do not visit a traditional library and turns an already valued park into an open classroom for the whole family. The challenge will be to sustain the proposal with clear hours, constant activities and care for the material, so that the country's first outdoor library becomes a lasting civic habit rather than a one-day ceremony.
