Alleged ELN camp struck in Apure: sources report around twenty dead

--- The context --- Southern Apure state, on the border between Venezuela and Colombia, has for years been under the influence of the National Liberation Army (ELN), according to accounts gathered in the area. That presence reportedly consolidated after the 2021 war between the Venezuelan Army and FARC dissidents, across a corridor of savannas and rivers linking to the Colombian departments of Vichada and Guainía. The area combines strategic value with social vulnerability: Buena Vista del Meta lies near the Meta River, a tributary of the Orinoco, and from there Puerto Carreño can be reached by boat in a few minutes. The Buena Vista del Meta Border Protection Base of the Bolivarian National Guard, tasked with river and border control, also operates in that territory, while rural communities live alongside fixed and mobile checkpoints and a growing militarization in municipalities such as Páez. --- The facts --- According to sources consulted on the ground, an operation by the Venezuelan Armed Forces against an alleged ELN drug stockpiling center has been under way since Thursday, October 29, 2026, between Buena Vista del Meta and Guafilla, a rural locality in Codazzi parish, Pedro Camejo municipality, in southern Apure. Those same sources say the attack reportedly began with drones that destroyed aircraft attributed to the group, camouflaged among the vegetation. According to those sources, the attack reportedly left at least twenty people dead, among them a woman and a pilot. The identified victims reportedly include Olinda Moraima Camacho de Solórzano, aged 62, who is presumed to have been the wife of one of the group's members. Juan Carlos Guerrero Márquez, Nelson Magallanes, Wilden Luis Solorzano Camacho and Gabriel Carlos Bruzual were also named, along with Luis Alexander Solórzano Camacho, aged 40, and Jesús Javier Bruzual Carrero, who would have turned 53 in December. According to local sources, the bodies of nine of those killed were taken to the morgue of the Luis Herrera cemetery in San Fernando de Apure. Those sources add that this Saturday, October 31, officers received orders to bury the bodies in the Esteros de Camaguán municipality, in southern Guárico state, a decision that, if confirmed, would make full identification by families harder. Some of the alleged fallen guerrillas reportedly carried Venezuelan identity cards, the Carné de la Patria and driving licenses. --- The positions --- On the Venezuelan official side, there has so far been no statement at all. Internationally, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in September 2026, during his visit to Colombia, that the government of Donald Trump had told Venezuela's interim authorities that the presence of ELN camps and other irregular groups on Venezuelan territory had to be resolved, and that the point would be key to improving relations between the two countries. The sources consulted interpret the operation within that pressure framework, although no authority has confirmed it. --- What remains unknown --- The Ministry of Defense has offered no official version of the operation or of the number of victims, so the death toll and the full identity of those killed rest, for now, solely on testimony gathered in the area. There is also no confirmation that the Bolivarian Intelligence Service took part in the Buena Vista del Meta operation, despite the aircraft movements recorded in the region during the week. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the Ministry of Defense confirm the operation and provide an official victim count? Were all of those killed members of the ELN, or were civilians among them? What role did the intelligence aircraft movements recorded in the area in the preceding days play? Does this operation mark a sustained change in the relationship between the Venezuelan Armed Forces and the ELN in Apure? --- EPM analysis --- The backdrop is a change of era on the border. The Colombian guerrilla presence in Venezuela grew after Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías came to power and, under the government of Nicolás Maduro Moros, the ELN consolidated its hold with men, territory, weapons and resources, according to the historical account gathered. Recent surveillance signals add to that context: between October 16 and 18, tracking systems recorded overflights by two United States Special Forces military aircraft between Táchira and Amazonas, and on October 28 two Cessna 208 Grand Caravan aircraft, registered YV-1188 and YV-2355, reportedly departed for Apure under the orders of the Venezuelan intelligence service. Earlier violence also weighs: on October 20, 2026, Araucan merchant Joel Vargas was shot in Guasdualito and, a week later, several men shot Cleiver Carvajal, aged 26. Without an official version, each of these elements remains attributed testimony, not a closed fact. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the most delicate aspect of what happened in Apure is not only the scale of the blow attributed to the Armed Forces, but the official information vacuum surrounding it: around twenty dead according to local sources and no statement confirming, denying or explaining. When a state acts with drones in a populated area and stays silent, independent verification and the protection of civilians move to the center of the debate. The border deserves security, but also transparency: every victim must be identified, every family informed and every operation accounted for to citizens on both sides.
