Press, remembrance and deadlines: the five stories shaping the day. 1. International: UNESCO's biennial report puts impunity for journalist killings at 86 per cent in 2024-2025, with 189 media workers dead, 127 of them in conflict zones, and warns of the growing use of drones against identified press teams. 2. United Kingdom: The United Kingdom opened a public consultation, running until 25 April 2027, on revising VICH Guideline 49 for validation of analytical methods used in veterinary residue depletion studies in food-producing animals. 3. Italy: The Ministry of Defence is promoting the Carabinieri 2027 historic calendar, to be presented on 6 November in Rome with a message of protection as constant presence. 4. United Kingdom: Sole traders and landlords earning more than £50,000 must send their second Making Tax Digital quarterly update by 7 November 2026. HMRC clarifies that the update is not a tax return, involves no payment, needs no confirmation of receipt and allows mistakes to be corrected without resending an earlier update. 5. Spain: Forensic teams identified 66 of the 69 people killed in Urda, with 60 notifications to families and 29 injured people still admitted in Castilla-La Mancha. The investigation examines the LZB failure and the normal running order from Atocha. 📌 Editor's note: five stories setting the pulse of the week, from the press to Urda.
