ELN drone attack kills two professional soldiers in Chocó

An ELN attack with drones loaded with explosives in San José del Palmar, Chocó, Colombia, left two professional soldiers killed and five wounded between…

--- The context --- In San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, in Colombia, troops were carrying out their duty in an area where the presence of armed groups keeps communities and the families of those who serve on alert. The use of drones loaded with explosives adds a form of indiscriminate attack that strikes at the life and integrity of soldiers, and that has caused shock amid concern over the escalation of violence attributed to armed groups. --- The facts --- The Army reported that, amid the ELN terrorist offensive, between October 31 and November 1, two professional soldiers were killed and five more were wounded. The events took place in the sector of Juntas de Tamaná and La Italia, in the municipality of San José del Palmar, where the troops were subjected to an indiscriminate attack with drones loaded with explosives. The soldiers killed were identified as Luis Alejandro Melo Gutiérrez and Juan de la Cruz Méndez Ortiz, who were struck by the detonations of the explosives dropped from drones. The institution reported that the Air Force has maintained constant overflights in the area to facilitate the extraction of the personnel still at the site and the evacuation of the five wounded to care centers, where they will receive medical attention. --- The positions --- The Army mourned the events and extended its condolences to the families of the two professional soldiers, whom the institution honored as heroes of the homeland. It also announced that institutional protocols and accompaniment for the families had been activated, with permanent support. The institution categorically rejected the act and said that it constitutes a violation of human rights and an infringement of international humanitarian law, by attacking men who were fulfilling their constitutional duty to guarantee security and sovereignty. --- What remains unknown --- The updated health status of the five wounded is not yet known, nor is the complete outcome of the extraction and evacuation to care centers. It has also not been reported what additional measures will be adopted in the sector of Juntas de Tamaná and La Italia after the attack. The available information confirms the deaths and the accompaniment announced for the families, but not the medical progress of the survivors. --- Unanswered questions --- How are the five wounded soldiers transferred to care centers progressing? What additional protection will the troops and the communities of San José del Palmar receive against new drone attacks? What response will follow to halt the offensive attributed to the ELN in Chocó? --- EPM analysis --- The attack in Chocó does not appear isolated in the information known. It adds to the attack in Planadas, in the department of Tolima, where four people were killed and 17 were wounded, and to the detonation of a motorcycle loaded with explosives in Algeciras, Huila, where patrol officer Julián Smith Castaño López was killed and nine people were wounded. The activation of an explosive device at the El Mango toll, on the Pan-American Highway, was also recorded, leaving only material damage to the road infrastructure. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the first duty in the face of this attack is to honor Luis Alejandro Melo Gutiérrez and Juan de la Cruz Méndez Ortiz, to stand with their families and to care for the five wounded, without ever normalizing violence against those who serve. Attacking with drones loaded with explosives is terrorism that violates human rights and infringes international humanitarian law. Supporting the security forces at this moment is also defending life, integrity and the peaceful presence of the State alongside the communities of Chocó.
