Dapo Akande joins World Court as UK judge returns after 9 years

Professor Dapo Akande was elected today as a judge of the International Court of Justice after the UN vote, with support from a majority of Member States.

--- The context --- The United Kingdom had gone 9 years without a judge at the International Court of Justice, which resolves disputes between states by peaceful means. That absence ended today: Professor Dapo Akande was elected at the UN with support from a majority of Member States, after a campaign by the prime minister, ministers and British diplomats. --- The facts --- Akande was elected today as a judge of the International Court of Justice and will serve for 9 years. He is a Professor of Public International Law and a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and an elected member of the UN International Law Commission. He originally qualified as a lawyer in Nigeria, is one of the United Kingdom's foremost international lawyers and has nearly three decades of experience. He has acted as counsel, adviser and expert before international courts and tribunals, including the Court itself, and has advised governments from all five UN regional groups and organisations including the UN and the African Union. --- The positions --- Prime Minister Andy Burnham said indirectly that the election signals that the United Kingdom is back on the world stage, ready to contribute to stability and uphold the rule of law, and that Akande will bring integrity, rigour and independent expertise. Akande said indirectly that he feels deeply honoured, thanked the states that placed their faith in him and pledged to serve with independence, to decide cases through a faithful and impartial application of the law and to help resolve disputes by peaceful means. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said indirectly that everywhere he goes people tell him how impressive Akande is, that they have been proud to support his campaign and that his expertise and independence will be an asset to the Court. --- What remains unknown --- It is not yet known which cases will first occupy the new judge during the 9 year term. --- Unanswered questions --- Which cases will mark the start of Akande's term? How will his experience help to resolve disputes by peaceful means? Will the British return after 9 years influence the tribunal's work? --- EPM analysis --- The election strengthens the multilateral path of settling conflicts through law, with a global jurist who has advised governments from all five regional groups. The challenge will be to maintain independence and show through impartial decisions that peaceful settlement remains credible. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the election of Dapo Akande returns the United Kingdom to the Court after 9 years and strengthens the commitment to resolving disputes between states by peaceful means, through a faithful and impartial application of the law. His global career, his independence and his experience before international tribunals place him well to serve. The test will come in concrete cases, where legal rigour must sustain the trust placed today by a majority of Member States.
