Greenland parliament ratifies security deal with US and Denmark

Greenland's parliament approved the security agreement with Denmark and the United States by 16-0, with seven abstentions.

--- The context --- Greenland is a semi-autonomous Danish territory between Europe and North America, the world's largest island, with a population of 57,000 people. Its location gives its security choices weight across the Arctic and the North Atlantic. --- The facts --- Lawmakers approved the agreement with Denmark and the United States aimed at bolstering security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. The vote passed 16-0 on Tuesday, with seven lawmakers abstaining. The deal was signed in September in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. --- The positions --- It was signed by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Greenlandic Foreign Minister Mute Egede said in indirect remarks that ratification was another important step for the self-governing island. --- What remains unknown --- The trilateral deal paves the way for more US bases and allows modernising and expanding activities at the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland. It enters into force only once the parliamentary processes of the Kingdom of Denmark, in conjunction with Greenland, are completed. --- Unanswered questions --- When will Denmark complete its process and let the deal take effect? How will the expansion at Pituffik take shape? What say will Greenland keep if it eventually chooses independence? --- EPM analysis --- The deal followed months of negotiations behind the scenes amid growing tensions over Trump's repeated threats to seize the vast, resource-rich Arctic island. Greenland will remain under Danish control, but the agreement would still apply if the island eventually chooses independence. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, ratification gives Greenland a clearer voice inside a difficult partnership, since the island's own parliament has now endorsed terms negotiated with Denmark and the United States. The real test will be practical rather than symbolic, in whether expanded activity at Pituffik respects self-government and whether security in the Arctic can grow without overriding the wishes of the people who actually live there.
