Imserso opens its 2027 spa programme with 199,000 places

Applications for Imserso's 2027 Thermalism Programme open on 5 November 2026, with 199,000 spa places and a deadline of 5 December for stays from February to…

--- The context --- Imserso, the Institute for Older People and Social Services attached to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, offers reduced-price places on its tourism and thermalism programmes to support active and healthy ageing. Both are a complementary service alongside Social Security benefits, aimed at improving older people's health and quality of life, while also keeping jobs and activity alive during the low season. The tourism programme began in 1985 with 16,000 places and has grown to nearly 900,000 in the current season. The thermal programme was created in 1989 to provide preventive and rehabilitative thermal treatments at affordable prices. More than 90% of tourism programme users rate it positively and two thirds return year after year, according to a survey carried out by Imserso itself in 2023. --- The facts --- On 5 November 2026 the application window opens for the 2027 Thermalism Programme, with 199,000 places at spas across Spain, between February and December, in stays of 10 days with 9 overnight stays on a full-board basis. Each stay includes a medical examination on arrival to prescribe the treatment, the thermal treatment prescribed by the spa's medical staff, medical follow-up, free leisure activities, and an insurance policy. For stays from February to August, applications may be submitted from 5 November until 5 December 2026, and for stays from September to December, until 12 May 2027. The waiting list accepts entries until 11 May 2027 for the first block and until 31 October 2027 for the second. Imserso recommends applying online through its electronic headquarters, with no electronic authentication required to access the application, although the downloadable form may also be sent through registries, offices or a post office box. The 2026-2027 Tourism Programme offers 879,213 places: 50.1% for peninsular coastal tourism, with 440,284 places and stays of 10 and 8 days in Catalonia, Andalusia, the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community; 25.9% for island coastal tourism, with 228,142 places and stays of 10 and 8 days in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands; and 23.9%, with 210,787 places, for getaways of 4, 5 and 6 days on cultural circuits, nature tourism, provincial capitals and Ceuta and Melilla. It includes accommodation and, with some exceptions, transport, and coastal trips add complementary health care and sociocultural entertainment. Prices range from 132.91 euros for 4 days in provincial capitals in the low season to 564.72 euros for 10 days in the Canary Islands with transport in the high season. The season brings two new features: a reduced fare of 50 euros, with 7,447 places for pensioners receiving a benefit equal to or lower than the non-contributory disability or retirement pensions, and a percentage of places for travelling with pets on peninsular and island coastal trips, in line with the rules and the care those animals require. --- The positions --- The social purpose is declared by the institution itself: travelling and receiving thermal treatments fosters autonomy, prevents dependency and combats unwanted loneliness, while also reducing the need for more invasive medical treatments and improving physical and mental well-being. At the spas, the interactions during the stay form part of that effect, with a special boost for rural territory in the low season. The economic effect is also recognised: tourism benefits the hotel sector and services such as restaurants, transport, travel agencies, retail and leisure, and it is contracted through a public tender. Participants may travel accompanied by their spouse or by the person with whom they maintain an analogous relationship, and also by children with disabilities. --- What remains unknown --- For tourism, applicants must live in Spain and be retirement pensioners under the Spanish Social Security system, with other cases such as widowhood pensioners aged 55 or over, or recipients of unemployment subsidies aged 60 or over. The ordinary accreditation window for 2026/2027 ran from 22 June to 10 July 2026, and people already accredited do not need a new application. Scoring values age, disability status, economic circumstances, participation in previous years and large-family status. For thermalism, applicants must also be able to manage the basic activities of daily life by themselves, need the treatments, have no medical contraindication, and reach the score that gives access to the spa and stay requested. Sales of tourism trips began from 14 September, after 2,938,156 letters were sent to the 4,602,255 accredited people. The information line 912 667 713 operates from Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 18:00. The distribution of the 199,000 thermal places by individual spa is not yet specified. --- Unanswered questions --- How many applications will the 2027 Thermalism Programme receive before its first deadline closes on 5 December 2026? Will the 7,447 places at the 50-euro fare be enough for pensioners with the fewest resources? What percentage of places will allow people to travel with their pets, and under what practical conditions? --- EPM analysis --- The fact that organises this story is the calendar: anyone who wants a thermal stay between February and August has one month, from 5 November to 5 December 2026, to apply. Around that date sits a mature system, with hundreds of thousands of places and published prices, combining preventive health, companionship and rest with deliberate support for tourist activity in the quietest months. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the opening of the thermal application window on 5 November confirms the strength of a programme that treats older people's well-being as a practical right rather than an occasional gesture. The 50-euro fare for pensioners with the fewest resources and the possibility of travelling with pets point in the same direction: nobody should be left out for lack of money or for refusing to be separated from a faithful companion. If demand responds as in previous seasons, the 199,000 spa places will again show that caring for older people also sustains towns, jobs and health.
