Unemployment rises in October but hits lowest October level since 2007

Registered unemployment rose in October by 43,128 people to 2,422,633, the lowest level for this month since 2007, with a year-on-year fall of 21,133 and rises…

--- The context --- Registered unemployment at the offices of the State Public Employment Service closed October 2026 with a monthly rise and, at the same time, with the lowest level for this month since 2007. That double reading defines the figure: there are more unemployed people than in September, but fewer than a year ago. --- The facts --- Registered unemployment rose by 43,128 people from September, or 1.81%, to 2,422,633. Year on year it fell by 21,133 people, or -0.86%, from October 2025. By sector, Services added 26,853 people, or 1.58%; Industry added 1,911, or 1.06%; Agriculture added 1,547, or 2.21%, and Construction barely changed, with 102, or 0.06%. The group with no previous employment rose by 12,715, or 4.87%. Female unemployment rose by 22,700 women, or 1.59%, to 1,451,105, the lowest level in this month since 2007, with a year-on-year fall of 29,360, or -1.98%. Male unemployment stood at 971,528 after rising by 20,428, or 2.15%, and it rose by 8,227, or 0.85%, from October 2025. Among people under 25, unemployment rose by 15,832 in the month, or 8.37%, to a total of 204,973. --- The positions --- The data support two readings at once. The monthly reading shows a broad deterioration, because unemployment rose in all 17 autonomous communities, led by Catalonia, with 8,174 people; the Valencian Community, with 6,716, and Castile and Leon, with 4,404. The annual reading, by contrast, shows a contained level, with less unemployment than a year ago and the female register at its lowest for October since 2007. --- What remains unknown --- The release does not detail the causes of the monthly rise or its breakdown by province or occupation. Nor does it specify whether the increase among young people and in the group with no previous employment reflects new registrations or other factors. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the October rise be corrected in the coming months? Why did youth unemployment grow by 8.37% in a single month? What explains male unemployment rising year on year while female unemployment falls? --- EPM analysis --- Hiring accompanied the month with 1,491,069 registered contracts, of which 645,173 were permanent, or 43.27%. In benefits, with September data, there were 1,763,649 beneficiaries, coverage of 80.82%, the highest rate in a September month in the historical series, average monthly investment per beneficiary of 1,233.9 and total investment of 2,134.8 million euros in that month. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, October sends a mixed signal that should be read in full: the monthly rise of 43,128 people is real and affects every sector and community, but the total of 2,422,633 remains the lowest for this month since 2007 and the year-on-year balance is a fall. The weakest point lies with young people and first-time jobseekers, where the increase was proportionally larger and requires close monitoring in the next monthly registers.
