United Kingdom presses Tanzania over election violence and detention

--- The context --- Tanzania came before the Human Rights Council in Geneva for its Universal Periodic Review, and the United Kingdom welcomed that participation while refusing to soften its alarm over the violence that surrounded the October 2025 elections. --- The facts --- Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders said her country remained deeply concerned by that electoral violence, including reported excessive force by security forces and a significant loss of life. She also regretted that the Commission of Inquiry never published its report, leaving accountability and inclusive reconciliation unresolved. --- The positions --- The British recommendations put victims first: transparent and accountable justice for violations during the 2025 electoral period, independent investigations, prosecution of perpetrators including state actors, and remedies for victims. London also sought an end to prolonged pre-trial detention and a review of non-bailable offences used against political opponents, journalists, human rights defenders and civil society actors. --- What remains unknown --- What happened during the electoral violence remains incompletely documented in public, and no immediate steps were announced for publishing the inquiry findings or for acting on the detention case highlighted in Geneva. --- Unanswered questions --- Will the Commission of Inquiry report finally be published? Will independent investigations lead to prosecutions, including of state actors? Will the case of opposition leader Tundu Lissu be revisited after his detention was called arbitrary? --- EPM analysis --- The intervention linked three threads that are hard to separate: lives lost around an election, an opposition leader held in detention described as arbitrary, and restrictive laws that London wants amended or repealed. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the heart of the Geneva statement is the human cost that remains unanswered: significant loss of life around the October 2025 elections, victims still awaiting remedies, and a detention that a United Nations working group considers arbitrary with serious fair trial concerns. Publishing the inquiry report would be the first verifiable step toward the inclusive reconciliation the United Kingdom invoked.
