Heavy rains flood avenues and disrupt mobility across Bogotá

--- The context --- On the afternoon of Thursday, November 5, Bogotá faced intense rainfall that disrupted daily life in several areas of the capital. Water accumulated on important avenues, reduced travel speeds and forced drivers to move with extreme caution amid limited visibility and wet pavement that lowers braking capacity and makes every sudden stop far more dangerous for everyone on the road. --- The facts --- The Secretariat of Mobility confirmed serious effects on vehicle flow and interruptions on important avenues as a result of the intense rainfall. Official reports highlighted flooding at Carrera 5A with Calle 31 Sur, along with severe pooling on Avenida Américas at Carrera 36 Bis and on Avenida Ciudad de Cali with Calle 132, points where traffic became especially slow during the afternoon. Emergencies were also recorded at Avenida Gaitán Cortés with Avenida Boyacá, on the NQS with Carrera 33, on Avenida Boyacá with Calle 60 Sur and at Calle 48 with Carrera 5, in Rafael Uribe Uribe. At the same time, IDIGER reported moderate rainfall in Suba and Engativá, expanding the map of affected sectors throughout the day in the capital. --- The positions --- Road management teams stressed that rain reduces visibility and that wet surfaces lower tire grip and braking capacity. They therefore recommended looking farther ahead than usual to anticipate puddles, detours or sudden stops, avoiding any distraction behind the wheel, braking progressively and early, and stopping in a safe place if visibility disappears completely during the heaviest downpour. --- What remains unknown --- It is still unknown how long it will take to fully normalize circulation on every affected corridor or whether the moderate rain in Suba and Engativá led to further disruptions. It also remains unclear what additional preventive measures will be applied at the points where water accumulated most strongly during this afternoon of intense rainfall. --- Unanswered questions --- How long will it take for normal flow to return to Bogotá's most affected avenues? What immediate actions will be taken at Carrera 5A with Calle 31 Sur and the other flooded points? How will drivers be protected when visibility disappears and braking loses effectiveness on wet pavement during intense rain? --- EPM analysis --- The episode shows a city exposed to rain events that, within a few hours, disrupt strategic corridors and residential sectors at the same time. The coincidence of flooding, pooling and emergencies in the south, the west and other areas makes prevention a permanent task and not only a reaction once water has already blocked the road for drivers. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, Bogotá again shows how one afternoon of intense rain can paralyze entire avenues when water accumulates and visibility falls suddenly without warning. The response cannot be limited to individual recommendations, although looking farther ahead, braking early and avoiding distractions saves lives every day. The city needs constant prevention, rapid attention at critical points and mobility planning that protects first those who travel in the most vulnerable conditions during each recorded weather emergency across the capital.
