Video revives complaint against Petro as court orders Congress inspection

Deicy Jiménez released a video alongside former president Gustavo Petro as alleged proof of her complaint about supposed payments with contracts.

--- The context --- The scandal known as sexocontratos added a new chapter in Colombia. The controversy surrounding former president Gustavo Petro now combines a public complaint, a video released as alleged evidence, a political response and a judicial action that reaches the Congress of the Republic. --- The facts --- On Wednesday, Deicy Jiménez, who reported that the former president allegedly paid her for sexual services with contracts, shared on social media a video in which she appears alongside him showing affection. Jiménez said she is publishing the video as proof that she is telling the truth. Jiménez added that she trusts the justice system and asked for protection for herself and her family, holding the former president responsible if anything happened to them. Amid the scandal, the Supreme Court of Justice ordered an inspection of Congress, in a decision issued from the office of Justice Javier Fernando Fonseca Alvarado, of the Instruction Chamber. --- The positions --- Ángela Benedetti, former Colombian ambassador to Panama and sister of former minister Armando Benedetti, responded that Petro himself displayed his private life and cited the Panama video as an example. Benedetti argued that, when public resources are involved, things change. The former president responded on Wednesday night that he never used a state contract to obtain favors from anyone. Petro said he will face the case before the judges and argued that the women in his government arrived through their ability and effort. --- What remains unknown --- The result of the inspection ordered at Congress is not yet known, nor are the concrete protection measures the complainant will receive. It has also not been judicially established whether the alleged facts reported by Jiménez occurred as she describes them in her public complaint. --- Unanswered questions --- What scope will the inspection ordered by the Supreme Court of Justice at Congress actually have in this investigation? Will Deicy Jiménez receive effective and timely protection for herself and for her family? Will the justice system be able to verify the alleged reported facts with evidence or rule them out definitively? --- EPM analysis --- The case brings together three levels that should not be confused. First, a complainant who presents a video as alleged evidence and asks for protection. Second, a political debate about private life and public resources. Third, a judicial investigation that is the only route capable of turning complaints and responses into proven or discarded facts. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this episode requires a rigorous separation between an accusation and a proven fact, because the release of a video on social media does not by itself establish any wrongdoing. The proper course is for the justice system to verify the alleged facts, protect the complainant and her family, and determine whether any public resources were improperly linked to state contracts. The former president must also receive full guarantees to present his defense, without turning political debate into a parallel trial that replaces the competent courts in this case.
