Ordóñez takes Interior post to build majorities in Congress

President Abelardo De La Espriella swore in Alejandro Ordóñez as Minister of the Interior after the departure of Rodrigo Lara.

--- The context --- President Abelardo De La Espriella swore in Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado as the new Minister of the Interior on Wednesday, November 4, following the departure of Rodrigo Lara. The ceremony took place at Casa de Nariño and sets a defined task from day one: to strengthen dialogue with Congress and with the regions so that Government projects can move forward with stable support. --- The facts --- Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado, 71 years old, was born in Bucaramanga on May 29, 1955. He is a lawyer who graduated with honors in Law and Political Science from the Universidad Santo Tomás campus and built his early career in the judiciary. He first served as a Bucaramanga councilor and later moved to the Administrative Court of Santander, where he was magistrate and president. He later rose to the Council of State, reaching the presidency of the judicial corporation in 2004. His greatest national recognition came in 2009, when he took over the Office of the Inspector General of the Nation during the Government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez, remaining in that top disciplinary oversight post until 2016. From the Public Ministry he promoted legal debates on legal euthanasia, the decriminalization of abortion, equal civil marriage and the minimum dose of narcotics. --- The positions --- The mission entrusted to the new minister is to build majorities to carry forward the projects of the Government of President De La Espriella that will be debated in Congress. He will act as a bridge between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch, dialogue with the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives to approve the national development plan bills, and serve as a link with governors, mayors and territorial entities. --- What remains unknown --- The first concrete agreements the minister will seek with the congressional blocs are not yet known, nor is the calendar for prioritizing the national development plan projects in the Senate and the Chamber. How coordination with governors and mayors will work in practice also remains to be detailed. --- Unanswered questions --- Which national development plan projects will be the first to reach debate in Congress under the coordination of the new minister? What majorities will the Government be able to build in the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives in the coming weeks? How will the link with governors and mayors translate into concrete decisions on local management and governability across the territories? --- EPM analysis --- The appointment places at the head of the Interior a jurist who has served in a municipal council, administrative courts, the Council of State and the Inspector General Office, with direct knowledge of the branches of power and of regional balances. His portfolio combines legislative politics, relations with the territories, internal public order and human rights in a single office, so his record will be measured in votes in Congress and in coordination beyond the capital. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the swearing-in of Alejandro Ordóñez gives the Government of President Abelardo De La Espriella a key piece at the moment when the legislative agenda needs stable majorities and permanent dialogue with the territories. At 71 years of age, with a career that runs from the Administrative Court of Santander to the presidency of the Council of State in 2004 and to the Inspector General Office between 2009 and 2016, the new minister brings institutional experience to build bridges while keeping the national development plan on course.
