Energy theft costs Air-e 170,000 million pesos a month

According to Air-e, illegal connections in Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira cost it 170,000 million pesos a month.

--- The context --- In Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira, illegal electricity connections have become a permanent problem for Air-e and for the power system serving those three departments. According to the company, the practice reaches homes, commercial establishments and other properties where networks or meters are manipulated so that the real cost of the service is never paid. --- The facts --- According to Air-e, electricity theft costs it 170,000 million pesos every month in revenue it does not receive. The company says the energy lost each month through these fraudulent connections would be enough to supply an entire department such as Magdalena, a comparison it uses to show the impact of this conduct on the regional electricity system. So far in 2026, 327 arrests in flagrante have been recorded in connection with this offence, according to Major Jhon Carvajal, security manager of Air-e Intervenida. More than 40 businesses were closed by the authorities over these practices, and during the past week irregularities were found in four establishments in the Barranquilla metropolitan area: a billiard hall, a shop and a plastic bag factory, among the cases identified. In the Chiquinquirá neighbourhood, in southeastern Barranquilla, a man was caught at the top of a pole handling network cables and was taken to the Immediate Reaction Unit of the Prosecutor's Office, where he must answer for fluid fraud, an offence that can carry penalties of up to six years in prison. --- The positions --- The company is keeping inspection operations in place across the three departments and asks residents to report tampering with meters, wiring or networks. Major Carvajal called on the community to report such cases to the authorities or to the company itself when they see them. The controls target both clandestine connections and modifications designed to artificially lower meter readings. --- What remains unknown --- The company did not specify how many of the more than 40 closed businesses are in each department, nor how the 327 arrests are distributed among Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira. The judicial outcome of the recent cases is also unknown, as is whether the closures imposed on repeat commercial offenders have reduced fraud in the areas under intervention. --- Unanswered questions --- How many of the 327 arrests recorded in 2026 will end in convictions for fluid fraud? What share of the 170,000 million pesos lost each month comes from homes, and what share from businesses that use energy to operate? Will sustained inspections actually lower the losses, or will fraud reappear in the same neighbourhoods and establishments? --- EPM analysis --- The figure that frames the debate is the scale: when the energy stolen in a single month would, according to the company, supply an entire department, fraud stops being a sum of isolated cases and becomes a system problem. Customers who pay their bills sustain with their money a service that others use without registering any consumption, and that asymmetry erodes trust in the basic rules surrounding an essential service. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, fighting electricity theft is necessary, but the response cannot end with arrests and closures if illegal connections keep reappearing in the same territories. The 327 arrests and the more than 40 closed businesses show enforcement capacity; what remains to be shown is that intervention also orders access to the service, so that paying the bill becomes the shared norm rather than the exception that punishes compliant users in Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira.
