Nariño airstrike targeted ELN leader Marcos Pacífico, death unconfirmed

A Military Forces bombing in Nariño, the fifth under President Abelardo De La Espriella, left a preliminary toll of eight dead and targeted alias Marcos…

--- The context --- Southwestern Colombia is the scene of an open territorial dispute between the National Liberation Army and the Farc dissidents commanded by alias Iván Mordisco. The conflict is concentrated in the Micay canyon, where armed groups seek to control drug trafficking routes and illegal mining activities, while rural communities in El Tambo, Guapi, Timbiquí, López de Micay and Argelia remain exposed to explosives and clashes. --- The facts --- In the early hours of Thursday, the Military Forces carried out a bombing in a municipality of Nariño bordering Cauca. It was the fifth airstrike by President Abelardo De La Espriella's government against illegal armed organizations, the second against the ELN and the first conducted in Colombia's southwest. The attack left a preliminary toll of eight dead, according to the information released. The operation targeted Neftalí Riascos Alegría, alias Marcos Pacífico, identified as the ELN's main leader in Cauca. Its preparation took four weeks and had United States intelligence support. Also identified as a possible target was Oliverio Orfilio Pai Rodríguez, known as alias Rubén, Chuqui or Elder, appointed second commander of the Southwestern War Front. --- The positions --- According to military intelligence, alias Marcos Pacífico, about 47 years old and with a 25-year criminal history, was responsible for operations in El Tambo, Guapi and Argelia, for planting antipersonnel mines and for recruiting minors in Cauca. A reward of $130 million was offered for his capture. The Southwestern War Front has, by that account, 477 members distributed among a regional command, three fronts and two companies. --- What remains unknown --- The death of alias Marcos Pacífico has not been confirmed. He was a target of the attack, but the National Institute of Legal Medicine must establish the identity of the recovered bodies before any official confirmation. Troops later entered the area to secure the territory and verify the effects of the bombing, and the authorities still must consolidate the final toll and determine the number of weapons seized. --- Unanswered questions --- Will Legal Medicine confirm that alias Marcos Pacífico is among the eight dead in the preliminary toll? Was alias Rubén, Chuqui or Elder, the other identified target, also killed in the operation? How many weapons were seized when troops moved in to secure the bombed area? --- EPM analysis --- The airstrike moves military pressure to the heart of the dispute over the Micay canyon. Yet the targeted structure does not depend on a single man, since the Southwestern War Front counts hundreds of members spread across fronts and companies with their own command. The forensic verification and the troops' subsequent presence on the ground will prove as decisive as the air strike itself. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, caution must govern this story and no headline should declare alias Marcos Pacífico dead before Legal Medicine identifies the bodies recovered in Nariño. The bombing carries real weight as the fifth of this administration and the first in the southwest, but its true effect on the ELN can only be measured once a consolidated final toll exists and it is known whether the structure lost its commanders or retains its capacity across Cauca and the Micay canyon.
