Abelardo orders deportation of migrants who offend in Bogotá

--- The context --- Bogotá faces a migration pressure that the president himself described as a complex situation. More than 148,000 Venezuelan migrants are in an irregular condition in the capital, Abelardo De La Espriella said after meeting Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán. The figure sums up a problem that the national government and the District decided to address in coordination. --- The facts --- At the end of the meeting, the head of state gave a direct order to the director of Migración Colombia, José Luis Castañeda. The instruction is to deport from the country, without any delay, Venezuelan migrants in an irregular condition who commit crimes or have records in Bogotá. The president placed the measure within the law and announced a daily strengthening of coordination between the national government and the District. The announced package is not limited to deportations. The president proposed protecting minors against criminal recruitment and intensifying controls in prisons to prevent crimes from continuing to be committed and instructions from continuing to be given from inside. He also defended keeping military control in Sumapaz and in the Usme and Sumapaz corridor to contain the expansion of those networks. --- The positions --- De La Espriella argued that the response must take place within the framework of the law and with both administrations working together. He also acknowledged that the mayor has had a very hard time for two and a half years, in a period in which, in his assessment, the previous government did not want to fight crime. --- What remains unknown --- The timetable for applying the deportations is still unknown, as is the number of people who could be covered by the order. How each migrant's records will be verified was not detailed either, nor was the procedure each case will follow before departure from the country. --- Unanswered questions --- When will Migración Colombia begin carrying out the deportations ordered by the president? How will irregular condition and records be checked in each case? What support will minors protected against criminal recruitment receive? Will there be a public and regular report on results in Bogotá? --- EPM analysis --- The order focuses on a defined group: migrants in an irregular condition who offend or have records. It is not a measure against migration in general, according to the scope described by the president. Its real effect will depend on the capacity to identify each case, on coordination between the national government and the District, and on controls in prisons and in the south of the capital being sustained. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the order is right to join two planes that Bogotá needed to see together: firm application of the law against those who offend and protection of minors against criminal networks. Deporting without delay those who are in an irregular condition and commit crimes is a response based on order, always within the legal framework the president himself invoked. The challenge now is to execute with verified data, daily coordination and measurable results for the capital.
