Toledo train crash leaves 68 dead as control decision faces scrutiny

Two high-speed trains collided between Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo, leaving 68 dead, a toll confirmed by García-Page.

--- The context --- The high-speed line between Madrid and Seville is one of the busiest rail corridors in Spain, linking the capital with Andalusia. On Wednesday morning, that route became the scene of a tragedy between the towns of Urda and Los Yébenes, in the province of Toledo, where two high-speed trains collided. The crash left at least 68 people dead and dozens injured, according to the toll confirmed by regional authorities. The scale of the disaster forced the suspension of services on the Madrid-Andalusia line and triggered a large health and emergency response across the area. --- The facts --- The collision happened at around 8:54 in the morning, at kilometer 118 of the Madrid-Seville line. A Renfe AVE train and a train operated by Iryo collided, and as a result of the impact up to four cars derailed and fell down an embankment beside the track. The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, confirmed that the toll had reached 68 dead, of whom 24 were traveling on the Renfe train and the rest on the Iryo train. Health services treated dozens of people, including passengers in serious condition, while rescue and identification work continued. --- The positions --- Transport minister Óscar Puente said the accident appeared to be linked to a wrong decision by the Adif control center in Atocha. According to his account, that center allowed the Renfe train to resume normal running after a failure in the LZB railway safety system earlier that same morning. The computer failure occurred at around 8:30 and automatically stopped several trains along a stretch of approximately 63 kilometers. At 8:36, the control center reportedly ordered the Renfe train to continue normally, even though protocols required it to remain stopped or to advance with caution and at reduced speed. --- What remains unknown --- The Guardia Civil questioned the control center operator who was regulating traffic on the affected stretch, as part of the investigation opened to clarify the circumstances. It has not yet been established precisely how the collision happened, nor have responsibilities been determined for the chain of decisions taken that morning. --- Unanswered questions --- Why was normal running ordered if protocols required the train to stay stopped or advance with caution? Who will take responsibility for the instruction given at 8:36 from the control center? When will high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia be able to resume? How is the identification of the dead progressing? --- EPM analysis --- The institutional response included Guardia Civil offices in Madrid, Seville, Córdoba and Toledo to assist relatives, collect DNA samples and help with identification. Renfe opened the phone line 900 10 10 20, Iryo provided 900 001 403 and the 112 emergency service in Castilla-La Mancha offered 900 122 112 for families seeking information. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the immediate priority is to care for the victims and their families with clear information and real support, while the investigation establishes without pressure how a technical failure turned into an order that cost dozens of lives. Rail safety cannot depend on improvised decisions inside a control center, and every breached protocol must carry verifiable consequences. Spain deserves complete answers, concrete responsibilities and guarantees that a failure like this will never happen again on any line in the country.
