Antioquia proposes a SpaceX spaceport in Urabá to Musk

--- The context --- In remote rural communities, medical care depends on long distances and limited connectivity. Telemedicine supported by satellite internet can bring specialists closer to places where guidance once arrived too late. A rural Colombian case, shared on X by Elon Musk, opened that conversation and ended up linked to a much broader proposal from Antioquia. --- The facts --- The account shared by Musk describes Karina, a 24-year-old woman with a high-risk pregnancy who had previously lost a baby. Reaching the nearest town could take up to two days on horseback. During a medical visit, a professional brought portable Starlink equipment and an ultrasound device, allowing a specialist located hundreds of kilometres away to observe the examination in real time and guide the procedure. The assessment made it possible to identify that Karina needed to be transferred immediately to a hospital. According to the account, she arrived in time, her baby was born safe and sound, and there were no complications for her. That visibility prompted the reply of the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón. --- The positions --- Rendón said the story shared by Musk happened in Antioquia. According to his message, with 1,200 Starlink antennas the department brings telemedicine to the most remote corners, saves lives, connects schools and brings opportunities closer to Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. His argument presented connectivity as a tool for essential services to reach populations historically distant from urban centres. The governor did not stop at celebrating connectivity. He said Antioquia wants to go further and that in the Caribbean area of Antioquia's Urabá it is ready to host a SpaceX spaceport. He added that it has nearly 2,000 hectares on its Caribbean coast that, he indicated, would have potential to advance an initiative in this industry. --- What remains unknown --- There is no answer from Musk or SpaceX to the invitation. Nor is it detailed what technical, environmental or infrastructure studies support the nearly 2,000 hectares mentioned, or what formal steps an eventual evaluation would follow. --- Unanswered questions --- Will Elon Musk respond to the proposal put forward by the governor of Antioquia? Are there technical assessments confirming the viability of a spaceport in Antioquia's Urabá? How would telemedicine be expanded with the antennas already installed? What participation would Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities have in any decision about the coastal territory? --- EPM analysis --- The episode shows how a concrete health case can make a deeper access gap visible. The verifiable part is powerful: a specialist could observe an examination remotely and guide an urgent decision, with a favourable outcome. The space proposal still belongs to the realm of a public invitation. Separating both levels makes it possible to value telemedicine for its reported results and to demand, for the spaceport, technical evidence not yet presented. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the strongest part of this story is not the space ambition, but the practical demonstration that connecting a remote point can turn an emergency into timely care. That result gives legitimacy to talk about connected schools and about Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities being included. The Urabá offer, by contrast, should be measured with studies, transparency and territorial participation, not only with digital enthusiasm. If Antioquia wants to turn connectivity into lasting development, it will first have to sustain the basics and document every step.
