Two men sentenced to 25 years for killing Alessandro Coatti in Santa Marta

--- The context --- A trial judge in Santa Marta, the capital of Magdalena, sentenced two men for the homicide of Italian biologist Alessandro Coatti, which took place in April 2025. The ruling came after both men accepted responsibility through a plea agreement, giving the victim's family a concrete judicial answer. --- The facts --- The convicted men are Uber Etilio Torres García and José Alfredo Díazgranados Sotelo. According to the Prosecutor's Office, they were found responsible for aggravated homicide, qualified and aggravated theft, and concealment, alteration and destruction of evidentiary material. The sentence is 25 years in prison, with a fine and a 20-year disqualification from public functions. They are two of the seven people sentenced to date. In early April 2025, Torres García contacted Coatti through a virtual community and arranged a meeting under the pretext of getting to know each other in person. The Italian citizen accepted and was taken to a property in the San José de Pando neighborhood, where other group members were waiting. There they beat him to take his belongings and money, and the blows caused his death. Afterwards they hid the remains in different parts of the city. --- The positions --- The Prosecutor's Office maintained that a criminal group used digital spaces to contact the victim, gain his trust and lure him to the house where he was attacked. The case was led by a prosecutor from the Prosecutor's Office specialized unit on violence based on victims' sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The investigation identified digital meeting platforms of the LGBTIQ+ community as a targeting mechanism. As part of the sentence, the judge ordered the convicted men to offer an apology to Coatti's family and sign a statement of non-repetition, as symbolic reparation. That act was completed at the end of the same hearing at which the sentence was handed down. --- What remains unknown --- The exact amount of the fine is not specified, nor is the individual situation of the other people sentenced. Nor are preventive measures known against the use of meeting platforms to target victims. Protection for users of those spaces depends on verifiable follow-up. --- Unanswered questions --- What concrete preventive measures will be adopted so that meeting platforms are no longer used to target victims? How will reparation for Coatti's family be guaranteed beyond the symbolic act at the hearing? What will become known about the other people sentenced and about the full structure of the group? --- EPM analysis --- The ruling combines a penalty, an acknowledgment of responsibility and symbolic reparation. The specialized focus is not an administrative detail: it named the particular risk that arises when spaces intended for the free exercise of identity and emotional relationships are instrumentalized. The pending task is preventive, with public follow-up and protection in digital environments. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this 25-year sentence is a necessary response to a crime that combined digital deception, robbery and violence that ended Alessandro Coatti's life, and its reach will be greater if reparation for the family and prevention in meeting spaces receive the same seriousness as the criminal penalty, because protecting people who seek to relate freely is also an obligation of justice that does not end when a ruling is announced at a hearing.
