Family of girl killed on Avenida Boyacá seeks justice and school safety

A 10-year-old girl died on October 29 on Avenida Boyacá in Bogotá, hit by a motorcycle on her way to school.

--- The context --- A 10-year-old girl died last Thursday, October 29, in Bogotá, after being hit by a motorcycle on Avenida Boyacá. The girl was on her way to school with her mother and two other girls. The crash caused shock in the capital. The girl's family spoke for the first time and asked that the case not go unpunished. --- The facts --- According to what has become known, the girl died at the scene of the crash. Early hypotheses suggest that, apparently, the driver was allegedly speeding. That hypothesis is preliminary. Authorities continue to investigate to fully clarify what happened. --- The positions --- Alex Forero, the girl's uncle, told the press what, he said, the Prosecutor's Office told the family: that they must wait three months, a time in which the driver would remain free, according to the family's account. In a separate demand, the family called for immediate justice and asked the Government and transit authorities to help fully clarify the crash and establish responsibilities, if any. Jessica Buitrago, the girl's mother, told the press that she lost her daughter and that another is in the hospital. In another statement, she asked for justice, for this not to happen again, and warned that many children walk along that path. --- What remains unknown --- The investigation has yet to define how the crash happened and whether there were responsibilities. The hospitalized daughter's condition and further details about the other girls are unknown. --- Unanswered questions --- What will the investigation conclude about the alleged speed and the exact circumstances? Why must the family wait three months, according to its account? What measures will protect that school path? How is the hospitalized girl doing? --- EPM analysis --- The case combines a family's grief with a question of prevention: the daily route to school. Clarifying the facts and making that school crossing safer are two distinct and necessary tasks. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, no school route should end in a tragedy like the one on Thursday, October 29, on Avenida Boyacá, and the institutional response must match that grief: a complete investigation without shortcuts, clear information for the girl's family and concrete road safety measures where many children walk every day, because protecting that path is also a form of justice and the only way to keep another family from suffering the same irreparable loss in Bogotá.
