Japan allocates two million dollars for earthquake-affected people in Colombia

The Government of Japan allocated two million dollars for care and recovery after the earthquake of August 10, 2026 in Colombia.

--- The context --- Colombia continues to deal with the consequences of the earthquake of August 10, 2026 in several communities across the country. Recovery combines immediate food and health needs with the slower task of rehabilitating damaged homes. In that setting, international cooperation stands as concrete support for the affected families. --- The facts --- The Government of Japan allocated two million dollars to support care and recovery for the communities affected by the earthquake of August 10, 2026 in Colombia. The assistance will provide food to approximately 9,000 people, rehabilitate 209 homes and strengthen health services in five departments of the country. The resources will be distributed through three international organizations, each with a defined responsibility. --- The positions --- The World Food Programme received one million dollars to provide food assistance in Valle del Cauca and Chocó. The International Organization for Migration will execute 500,000 dollars to rehabilitate 209 homes in Chocó and provide technical support to reduce vulnerability to future disasters. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in coordination with the Colombian Red Cross, will allocate 500,000 dollars to strengthening health services in Chocó, Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, Caldas and Quindío. --- What remains unknown --- The pace at which each organization will launch its components is not yet known, nor is the way in which progress will be reported in each department. It is also unknown how families will be prioritized or what follow-up will accompany the rehabilitation and the health strengthening. Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs Daniella Restrepo Duarte thanked the Government and the people of Japan for their solidarity with the affected communities. The ambassador of Japan in Colombia, Shimizu Toru, stressed that the resources will help restore living conditions for affected families, strengthen health care and move toward safer and more resilient communities. Nils Grede, Celeste González, Melker Mabeck and Francisco Moreno also took part. --- Unanswered questions --- How soon will food assistance reach approximately 9,000 people in Valle del Cauca and Chocó? How will the 209 homes to be rehabilitated in Chocó be selected? What improvements will health services in five departments receive? Will there be public reports on the use of the funds and the results in each territory? These questions only verifiable implementation will answer. --- EPM analysis --- The value of this aid lies not only in the total amount, but also in how it is divided by need: eating today, returning to a safe home and having nearby health care. Having three international organizations take on distinct fronts can give coherence to the effort, provided coordination avoids duplication and communities take part in decisions that affect them. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this cooperation is right to approach recovery in a comprehensive way: food sustains the present, housing restores roots and health protects what is most fragile after an emergency. The challenge now is for every dollar to become a visible change for affected families, without bureaucracy delaying what is urgent. If implementation is transparent, close to communities and sustained over time, the aid will leave behind more than immediate relief: territories better prepared and people with the confidence to rebuild their lives with dignity.
