Prosecutor's office urges Cali to aid quake victims

Colombia's Attorney General's Office required Cali's Mayor's Office to take immediate measures to guarantee comprehensive humanitarian care for victims of the…

--- The context --- The August 10, 2026 earthquake left households in Cali that, according to the Attorney General's Office, still face difficulties accessing the assistance and recovery arranged by the authorities. --- The facts --- The office issued a preventive request to the District Mayor's Office of Cali to adopt immediate measures guaranteeing comprehensive humanitarian care. Many characterized families remain pending inclusion in the Single Registry of Victims (RUD) or face inconsistencies in the classification of their properties, which limits economic aid, temporary housing and other state support. According to the office, nearly 4,000 families reported in territorial instruments would be awaiting incorporation into the national registry. A similar number of habitability update requests reportedly could not be processed due to operational restrictions of the platform, according to the oversight body. --- The positions --- The oversight body required strengthening humanitarian care, guaranteeing support for families meeting the requirements for temporary housing subsidies, advancing coordinated efforts with competent entities and presenting a detailed report on measures adopted. The office reiterated that administrative or technological difficulties cannot prolong the vulnerability of affected people and that it will continue preventive oversight to protect the fundamental rights of the affected population. --- What remains unknown --- The report the district administration must present is still unknown, as is the timeframe to incorporate families that would be waiting into the registry. It is also unknown when the habitability updates that reportedly could not advance may be processed. --- Unanswered questions --- When will pending families be included in the Single Registry of Victims? Within what timeframe will habitability updates be resolved? What immediate measures will the District Mayor's Office adopt? --- EPM analysis --- The request exposes a gap between territorial characterization and effective access to aid. Without an updated registry or a functional platform, support remains out of reach for households already identified as affected. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, the preventive request is right to point out that a procedure cannot become a second harm for victims of the August 10, 2026 earthquake. Protecting families requires correcting the registry, unblocking the platform and supporting each case until aid arrives. Without effective incorporation into the Single Registry of Victims and accessible subsidies, recovery will remain partial and vulnerability will be prolonged unnecessarily for every household still waiting today.
