Real Madrid to expand schools for children after quake

Trade minister Mauricio Gómez Amín revealed in Spain his meeting with Florentino Pérez to bring sports and education academies to Colombian communities…

--- The context --- Colombia supports communities hit by the August 10, 2026 earthquake, measuring 7.4, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar (Chocó) and a depth of 103 km. Sport emerges as a path to recovery for affected children and young people. --- The facts --- Mauricio Gómez Amín, minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, shared in a ministry video his meeting at the club headquarters in Spain with Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid. In mid-October the club announced it was evaluating expanding its programs in Colombia. The Madrid meeting addressed bringing the Real Madrid Foundation Educational Football Program academies to the quake zones, with the Revel Foundation, its president Carlos Salazar and Alejandro Cabrera, director in Spain. The program combines football, values, coexistence and personal development. James Rodríguez shone there. --- The positions --- Gómez Amín said Pérez committed to sports schools in the affected areas and to continuing to collaborate to restore hope after the tragedy, with humor about the years of help. He stressed the foundation has helped more than 60,000 children over the last 18 years and said the Government of Abelardo De La Espriella remains firm with the homeland. --- What remains unknown --- There is no public timetable and no defined communities. Start dates and selection mechanisms are also unknown, so the reach will depend on agreements between the organizations and needs identified in each territory. --- Unanswered questions --- When will the timetable for the quake zones be announced? Which communities will be included first and under what criteria? How will the most affected children gain access? What educational follow-up will participants receive once enrolled in the program? --- EPM analysis --- The alliance since 2023 between both foundations added in September 2026 the Gimnasio de Los Cerros in Bogotá, with a projection of more than 200 students. That base gives a verifiable starting point, although its value will depend on reaching the hit territories. 📌 EPM Take: In EPM's view, this effort matters because it places affected children at the center of recovery, with education, coexistence and sport as concrete tools rather than decoration. The commitment announced in Spain will be credible if it soon becomes a timetable, defined communities and academies operating in the quake zones. The alliance prior record provides a real base, but the proof will be on the ground and in the children who truly smile again with real support behind them.
